Meet Our Group Facilitators

20150609_132201Ali Chambers, MA, LMFT

Fasting Weight Management Program Group Facilitator, Weight Maintenance Booster Group Seminars

I have worked at the Positive Choice Integrative Wellness Center at Kaiser Permanente since 1993 and I facilitate Full Fasting Weight Management groups helping people to lose weight. I also facilitate Weight Maintenance Booster seminars that focus on helping those people who have lost weight maintain a healthy body weight.

My strengths and expertise are in building and facilitating communication and relationship skills. My approach to facilitating groups or in individual work is to listen intently to what my clients say with words and without words… with as little judgment as possible. My intention is to create a safe and supportive environment, in which people become willing to tell their stories, and then see how food and eating have helped them survive the challenges in their lives. Then, working together we try to discover what else could work in place of food. I work in an encouraging manner and with humor, honoring where people are and supporting them in changes they want to make.

I really enjoy being with people, getting to know them and using the creative process to help them discover new and wonderful aspects about themselves.

Education: Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute, Bachelors degree in Psychology from University of California Los Angeles Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

Fasting Weight Management Program Group Facilitator, Weight Maintenance Booster Group Seminars

Originally from San Francisco, I have worked at Positive Choice Integrative Wellness Center and Health Education since 2002.  Prior to graduate studies in Holistic Health Education based in Somatic Psychology, my early studies focused on culture and social psychology of peoples who have immigrated, settled and continue to build the integrity of our country. I have deep interest in and respect for how individual and collective histories affect personal health. Since 1983, I have worked in the fitness industry, choreographing movement to music while supporting individuals increasing their: endurance, flexibility, range of motion, muscle strength, cardio vascular and metabolic efficiency. My years of academic and professional experiences, combined with my personal lifestyle, support philosophies of compassion and empathy. I believe my task is to listen and meet our clients where they are, extend validation, facilitate them to “meet and exceed their edge of comfort”, while assisting them to holistically create lifestyle changes through self-love and action.

Fasting Weight Management Program Group Facilitator

I started working for the Positive Choice Integrative Wellness Center in 1996. I am the group facilitator for the Fasting Weight Management Programs at the Bostonia Kaiser Permanente facility in East County.

The process of losing weight is not just about becoming physically smaller; it is about an inner change in mind and attitude as well. I believe that people in the weight management program truly change from the inside out. I see my role as helping people see the possibility of change through encouragement and acceptance. I help them to view their past experiences as a teacher, not as a frame for their future success.

KariKari McCloskey RD, CPT

Partial Fasting Weight Management and Weight Maintenance Group Facilitator, Personal Trainer, H.E.A.T. – Healthy Eating and Training

I have worked at the Positive Choice Integrative Wellness Center since 1995. I teach Partial Fast Weight Management groups, Maintenance Programs, and Booster Classes. In addition, I provide personal training and H.E.A.T — Healthy Eating and Training.

Many people think losing weight and getting in shape depends just on their behaviors – what they do or don’t do. I have found both in my personal life and with the people I work with, that achieving health requires a more holistic approach. Real change begins when we are ready mentally and find a balance of mind, body, and soul. It is when we bring the whole of ourselves to the process that great health can be achieved.

I live what I teach. I like sharing short-cuts and techniques that I’ve learned through my 23 years of practice. I enjoy working with people and helping them to follow their unique individual path of wellness.

Lee Sigall, MA

Fasting Weight Management Program Group Facilitator

I have worked at the Positive Choice Integrative Wellness Center at Kaiser Permanente since 1982. My primary job is to facilitate Full Fasting Weight Management groups helping people to lose weight.

My philosophy for facilitating groups is to take the “pulse” of a class or individual client to determine which interventions to utilize. I believe in accepting people where they are and gently encouraging them to a higher level of functioning. The non-judgmental atmosphere in my groups allows for the free-flow of ideas and feelings. I coach people to develop new-found skills. My favorite compliment is hearing someone say that their 100-pound weight loss was secondary to the other skills they have developed.

Education: Masters Degree in Psychology from San Diego State University; Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

Lucia Foster- Engen, MA, BCBlucia-foster

My interest in the field of health psychology motivated me to obtain certifications as a Biofeedback Therapist, a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP), a Pre-Licensed LGBT Affirmative Psychotherapy Provider, an Addiction Counselor, a Trauma, PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury Counselor, a Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Counselor, and Jungian Psychotherapy provider. I am currently a doctorate candidate for a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with emphasis in health psychology, and I am working on my dissertation that aims to investigate the Physiological and Psycho-physiological Markers of Emotional Eating.

I work at the Positive Choice Integrative wellness Center as a biofeedback therapist. I help people learn how to manage stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia and chronic pain related to different medical and psychological disorders by using Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback (HRVB).  I am also a group facilitator for the weight management and pre-bariatric surgery programs. I have many years of experience with bariatric and obese patients and my passion is helping people learn to cope with life stresses without relying on food as a coping mechanism.

Understanding that every individual is unique and that individuals will respond differently to different interventions, I often use a combination of Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Self-Compassion Therapy as means to help our patients increase awareness about their own patterns of behavior and understand the connections between their mind (psychological symptoms) and body (physical symptoms). My goal is to help patients increase their ability to manage symptoms and consequently improve the quality of their life while reaching optimal health.
